Sclerotherapy Spider Vein Treatment
What
are spider veins?
Spider veins are known in the medical world
as telangiectasias or sunburst varicosities. Spider veins are
small, thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin.
Although these super-fine veins are connected with the larger
venous system, they are not an essential part of it.
There are plenty of factors that contribute to the development
of spider veins. Some of the factors include: heredity, pregnancy
and other events that cause hormonal shifts, weight gain, occupations
or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, and
the use of certain medications.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a
micro-injection technique in which a concentrated saline solution
is injected into the undesired tiny blood vessels using an
extremely small needle.
What are the results?
Each injection dries out the cells that
line the blood vessels with scar tissue so they cease to carry
blood and therefore no longer visible.
Sclerotherapy can improve
your appearance and your self confidence, but it’s unrealistic
to believe that every affected vein will disappear completely.
The veins will begin to appear lighter after each session.
Two or more sessions are usually required to achieve the maximum
outcome. The appearance of the vessels may continue to improve
for up to one or two months after the treatment. You will be
rescheduled for an evaluation after your treatment.
You should also be aware that the procedure treats only those
veins that are currently visible and will not prevent future
veins from becoming visible.
Is the procedure painful?
No. Any pain is
minimal. Each injection will cause a brief stinging sensation.
After Treatment?
Bandages will be applied
to each injection site and you will be asked to purchase and
wear compression stockings to maintain pressure on the treated
veins. Although each patient is different, most patients will
need 2 to 3 treatments (separated by at least a month). The
goal is to produce about 75% improvement. Between treatments,
you are free to carry on your normal activities. You should
keep the bandages on your legs dry and in place until the next
morning. At that time you may bathe and remove the bandages.
Wear your compression stockings the first night, then during
the day only for the next 1-2 weeks. You should walk at least
30 minutes a day, starting the day of the procedure, for at
least a week. Avoid heavy lifting, high-impact exercise and
weight machines for your legs for the first week.
Are there any risks and side effects?
Though
serious medical complications from Sclerotherapy are extremely
rare when the procedure is performed correctly, they still
can occur.
Risks include:
• Swelling at the injection site
• Bruising
• The formation of blood clots in the
veins
• Severe inflammation
• Adverse allergic reactions to the Sclerosing
solution
• Skin injury that could leave a small
but permanent scar
The more common complication is cosmetic
pigmentation irregularity – brownish
splotch that will fade with time. Another problem that can
occur is “telangiectatic matting,” in which small
red blood vessels appear around the treated area that can be
corrected with further treatments.
