Microdermabrasion
What is Microdermabrasion?
It is a
procedure in which a Microdermabrasion machine is used to
resurface areas of your skin by dispersing aluminum oxide
crystals through a hand piece which also removes the crystals
and the dead skin by way of a vacuum. The depth of the Microdermabrasion
is tailored to each client’s
individual skin profile. The result is a gentle, abrasive polishing
of the skin. The Microdermabrasion treatments take between
30 and 60 minutes and are performed at 2 week intervals. More
than one treatment is usually required to achieve the client’s
desired results. Depending on your individual skin needs, your
medical esthetic nurse may recommend pairing your Microdermabrasion
with a chemical peel.
Why should I have Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is used to treat minor acne scars, minor
surgical scars, narrow stretch marks, fine lines, moderate
wrinkles, crow’s
feet, blackheads, enlarged pores, and pigmentation problems
such as age spots, uneven skin tones, brown spots, and melanosis.
It is ideally suited for aged skin and skin that has been damaged
by overexposure to the sun. Microdermabrasion treatments improve
the quality, texture and pigmentation of the skin.
Is Microdermabrasion for facial areas
only?
No. Microdermabrasion can improve many areas, including
but not limited to: décolleté,
backs of hands, backs of arms and the back.
Are there any side effects of Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion
is a very safe procedure and when performed correctly has very
few side effects.
• Because the procedure removes the upper
layer of the epidermis, there is a minimal risk of infection.
• Since Microdermabrasion usually only removes
of the uppermost level of the epidermis, pigment changes are highly unlikely,
but are a risk with deeper penetration.
• Scarring is a rare occurrence. To minimize
the chances of scarring, it is important that you follow all post treatment
instructions.
• If you have a history of herpes simplex
blisters/cold sore, a reactivation of this condition can occur after Microdermabrasion.
Is there any downtime with Microdermabrasion?
Clients do not
typically require time off work after the procedure. You can
have Microdermabrasion done on your lunch hour and resume your
normal schedule right after the procedure. Microdermabrasion
is a non-surgical procedure that does not require any anesthesia.
