Chemical Peels
Chemical peeling is a technique used to improve
the appearance of the skin which is typically performed on
the face, neck, chest, or hands. Chemical peels are used on
the face for a variety of reasons-to even out pigmentation,
lessen deep or surface wrinkles, treat acne, and improve texture.
How are chemical peels performed?
In this procedure, a chemical solution is applied to the face
to slough off the dead surface layers of the epidermis. One
or more chemical solutions can be used based upon the client’s
individual skin care needs. Chemical peels are usually performed
in a series of six, each one 6 weeks apart, for optimal results.
Is there any down time after a chemical peel?
The lightest peels are made from alpha hydroxy acids (AHA).
With AHA peels, the entire procedure is quick and easy. No
recovery time is needed, and you can immediately resume your
normal daily routine. Deeper peels such as TCA may require
a few days to recover from the redness associated with these
peels.
What should be expected after treatment?
Depending on the type of peel, a reaction similar to sunburn
occurs following a chemical peel. Superficial peeling usually
involves redness, followed by scaling that ends within three
to seven days. It is important to avoid exposure to the sun
following a chemical peel since the new skin is fragile and
more susceptible to complication.
Are there any possible side effects from chemical
peels?
Possible side effects include:
• Hyper-pigmentation for darker complexions
and those with a history of hyper-pigmentation
• Hypo-pigmentation
• Allergic reaction to the chemical solution
• Skin infection
• Scarring (if post treatment instructions
are not followed)
• Reactivation of cold sores for those with a history
of cold sores
